Developer's work

In this post, I will point out some techniques or difficulties I had to deal with:

  • Scrolling: I used a personalized CCScrollView with Parralax effect. Scroll view had to be resizable (to create 3 distinct areas: left/middle/right). It had to use bounce or not, swipe effect (with decreased speed) or not (for camera mode). Gesture recognition was a problem with children's small and imprecise finger: they need to scroll and touch animals. So i had to deal with the speed of gesture and speed of scroll (if the scroll is near stopping, touching an animal is treated).

For each world, Jean-Yvon had to:

  • Create the landscape (with 2 layers for parallax effect). He (re)discovered hand drawing/painting with a Wacom Bamboo tablet and he is talented! Each landscape is composed of three environments (like desert/savanna/jungle) for a total size of  9000*640 px (HD).

Planning and budget

It was our first IOS project: we had all to learn (objective-c, cocos2d, IOS sdk, device capacities, xcode…). We planned to do a simple game just to learn and test the AppStore.

But finally, we created a real game with a lot of graphical resources.

October 18 (week 42): I tell my web designer about my idea: he loves videogame, so no need to convince him, create a game (even for children) can only be fun! So we started to work on the concept and I tried to create a prototype with cocos2d during the first 2 weeks.

Platform and software

There are no translations available.

logo_cocos2dWe have chosen Cocos2d framework to develop our game (and to learn objective-c !) because:

  • A lot of games use it (so it is mature)
  • The community is very active
  • A lot of tutorials and books are available.
  • No need to learn openGL.
  • It’s free and open source

The concept / the origin

One day, I saw my little daughter playing with my Iphone: she likes to scroll, loves animals sound and photo, so I imagine making a game with left/right scroll (by sliding) for finding animals.
I always loved Playmobil©, so I liked the idea to create landscape and place items on it.

But how to make money with this concept?

Why to make an IOS game for children?

There are no translations available.

For our first project, it seemed to be easier and shorter to develop a game for children (which needs less resources – no 3d or complex textures).

The AppStore brings us marketing opportunities with its 130 Millions of IOS devices (Android doesn’t seem mature yet).
